Tanker rivals unite to fight delay in Air Force contract

During the three-year battle for an Air Force tanker contract, there have been few occasions when rival political backers of Boeing Co. and Northrop Grumman Corp. found themselves in agreement.

But that’s what happened this week, when lawmakers on both sides of the tanker debate turned their aim on a common target: 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Politicians from Alabama to Kansas and Washington state lit into the White House after reports surfaced Tuesday that the administration, working to cut defense costs, may have asked the Pentagon to delay the tanker program by five years.

The backlash continued even as the administration denied making any such recommendation. Outcry was strongest in areas hoping to land the lucrative work of assembling the big jets.
